Palm Pre owners will be able to get their hands on paid-for apps within a matter of days, reports suggest, as the company gears up to launch the powerful smartphone outside the US.

According to a company timeline unearthed by Digital Daily, the mobile phone manufacturer will make paid-for applications available on the site on 24th September. At present all 80 apps on the site are free downloads.

The move is intended to help the software market compete more effectively with rivals, such as the iPhone App Store and the Android mobile phone version Android Market, by incentivising more developers to bring Pre-compatible apps to market.

News of Palm’s plans comes just a matter of weeks before the Pre is due to go on sale in the UK exclusively on iPhone 3G S carrier O2, having sold around 800,000 units in the Pre in the US since launching earlier this year.

Stand-out features of the Pre include a changeable battery, a slide out QWERTY keyboard, a large touchscreen and 8GB of internal memory.
