Apple planning to fight Nokia infringement lawsuit

Nokia’s infringement lawsuit against Apple looks set to run and run, after the Cupertino-based technology giant announced it intends to “vigorously” defend itself in court.

Nokia’s lawsuit covers ten patents which the company alleges have been infringed by Apple mobile phones. These cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption.

This technology has been featured in iPhones since the launch of the first edition in 2007, despite the fact that Apple has failed to reach a licensing agreement with Nokia.

A statement issued today by Apple alerting the industry that it will fight the case, coupled with the complexity of the issues concerned, has raised the possibility of a legal contest that could run for years.

Nokia’s decision to pursue Apple over the matter comes after the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer has lost a significant tranche of its market share to Apple in recent years.

This is thought to have been a key contributory factor in Nokia last week recording its first quarterly loss this decade.

    I hope Nokia wins. It's not like they're asking Apple for huge amounts of money - well, it's not huge amounst of money if you're making profits like Apple. Plus they should pay if they're piggybacking on Nokia's R&D.

    It seems likely that Apple was not that concerned or they would not have
    gone ahead with the iPhone. Don't believe Jobs is that dumb.

    Apple wouldn't have batted an eyelid. But I'd love them to be hit with a cease and desist order - can you imagine the fussin' and fightin' from the fanboys?
