NOKIA COMES WITH MUSIC LOGO

The Comes With Music service for Nokia mobile phones has failed to find support among consumers, despite strong sales for those handsets that came with it pre-installed.

In July this year, the Finnish mobile manufacturer claimed that unit sales for the Nokia 5800 Comes With Music phone had surpassed three million in the three months since its release.

This made the 5800 the most in-demand music playing device of any sort over the period, according to Nokia.

However, data gleaned by music blog MusicAlly suggests that only a small proportion of Nokia owners are using the all-you-can-eat download service, with just 107,000 people signed up across the globe as of July.

Of these only 32,728 are based in the UK, while in Italy and Switzerland the number of subscribers stands at just 691 and 560 respectively.

News of poor take-up for Comes With Music comes just days after Nokia announced it recorded a loss of £838 million for the period from July to September.

The downbeat performance comes amid a slowdown in demand for mid-range mobiles and marks the first time that Nokia has posted a quarterly loss this decade.

Istn't Comes With Music the sort of new distribution/business model, which pirates reckon is needed to save the music industry? If this sort of take-up is anything to go by, it won't make a jot of difference.
