Tesco has renewed consumer hopes of an iPhone price war by hinting that it will aim to ‘bring a bit of Tesco value to the market for Apple mobile phones’.

The retail giant’s mobile phone division today confirmed it is to join the ranks of UK networks selling the handset, which currently includes O2 and Orange. Vodafone is poised to enter the market early next year.

Orange’s deals, announced early this month, disappointed many who had hoped that the carrier would undercut O2.

However, in an exclusive interview with Top 10 Mobile Phones, a spokesperson for Tesco Mobile said that the carrier is “aiming to bring a bit of Tesco value to the sector” – a remark that strongly suggests that it will be offering the handsets at cheaper price points.

She also indicated that iPhones could be on sale in stores and online before Christmas, thus allowing the carrier to capitalise on the seasonal market.

“We'd love to have the Tesco Mobile iPhone in store and online in time for Christmas but can't confirm at this stage as we'll only make it available once we're happy customers will get the best possible quality of service,” she noted.

    Great, I've been looking at the iphone and the contracts available. I will now wait for Tesco to bring out their deal, I'm sure it will be a really great deal and well worth waiting for.

    It is time competition is introduced, current IPHONE sales and contracts are fixed, reducing the chances of many potential buyers.

    Tesco Mobile is a 50:50 joint venture between Tesco and O2. Hope this still leaves room for a price war! On the other hand, it uses the 02 network, which works better than Orange in my area.

    @Wendywoo @ Ellen.

    Hi both,

    I did broach the subject of whether Tesco Mobile's partnership with O2 would tie Tesco to the existing price points in our interview. Apparently it'll no have bearing on things, meaning that Tesco will potentially have a free hand to undercut rivals.

    RE:Launch date. Apparently, there's still some testing to be done. But given that there's a huge competitive advantage to Tesco getting its iPhone offering in stores before Christmas, I think we can expect that their people will move heaven and earth to do so. Check back here and we'll keep you up to date with developments.

    I will buy a iPhone 3g for sure, but i am waiting to see if the price changes when the 3GS comes on the market. However I don't want a contract. Where can I buy an iPhone 3g without a contract and UNLOCKED? Who has the best prices?
