HTC suffered an 18.4 per cent year-on-year decline in operating profits during the third quarter, despite strong sales for its Android mobile phones.

Latest figures for the Taiwanese phone manufacturer reveal that profit for the period between July and September fell from £128 million to £106 million. Revenue also dropped by 10 per cent year-on-year to £633 million.

The weaker performance has been attributed to greater competition in the smartphone sector, as well as the launch of the iPhone 3G S.

A price cut for the iPhone 3G is also thought to have impacted on the company’s revenues.

News of the firm’s latest showing comes as it has just embarked on an extensive advertising campaign intended to make its range of devices more appealing to the mass market.

Featuring the tagline “You don’t need to get a phone. You need a phone that gets you”, the campaign is designed to reflect the firm’s “commitment to focus on people, their needs and how they work and live to ensure that HTC devices suit them”.

It's not that surprising. HTC still doesn't really mean much unless you're a tech fan and the company probably won't have much in the way of mass market brand awareness for a while yet. But come next year, I reckon they could do an LG.
