Nokia has called time on N-Gage after the ailing gaming service failed to find the customer support that had been expected when it launched some six years ago.

The Finnish mobile phone manufacturer’s plans for the service emerged on its official N-Gage blog in a posting which bore the headline: "Mobile gaming evolves – Ovi Store is here".

The post announced that from hereon in Nokia “will no longer publish new games for the N-Gage platform” and that the site will be pulled completely as of September 2010.

Gamers were reassured that a raft of games will still be available from Nokia’s Ovi platform, along with more practical applications.

N-Gage’s withdrawal comes after the platform came in for sustained criticism from gamers over the quality of the titles on offer, as well as persistent bugs.

Nokia now plans to include the kind of gamer-focused community features into the Ovi Store that N-Gage offered, including a satellite site where enthusiasts could discuss their gaming experiences and post high scores.
