NOKIA N900

Nokia has begun shipping its latest flagship N900 smartphone, ahead of its launch on November 16th.

Arguably closer to a pocket PC than a mobile phone, the N900 is home to a powerful RM Cortex-A8 processor, as well as 1GB of dedicated application memory.

This enables users to access multiple applications simultaneously with minimal lag.

It is hoped that this will enable Nokia to steal a march on Apple whose iPhone 3G S has come in for no little criticism for limiting owners’ ability to multitask.

The handset will also be the first to feature Nokia’s Linux Maemo operating system, which has hitherto been restricted to the company’s range of internet tablets.

José-Luis Martinez, Vice President of Nokia’s Nseries division, said: "The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device preorders.

"What's exciting is the Maemo software, which takes its cues from the desktop computer and offers a full browsing experience like no other handset.

"We believe the Nokia N900 will be a very compelling device for people who are passionate about technology."

Other features of the N900 include a 3.5-inch touchscreen and a slide-out physical QWERTY keyboard.
