One of the year’s most anticipated and highly sought-after mobile phones, the Nokia N900, has been delayed, apparently as a consequence of overwhelming consumer demand.

According to a post on Nokia’s semi-official blog NokNok, the phone will now not go on sale until December 4th.

The high-end handset had initially been expected to arrive on shelves in early November, but its launch was postponed while Nokia made last-minute adjustments to the device.

Nokia’s official reason for the latest delay is that it has been inundated with pre-orders for the smartphones.

Touted as being closer to a pocket PC than a mobile phone, the touchscreen-operated N900 is home to a powerful ARM Cortex A8 processor and 1GB of dedicated application memory, to allow users to multi-ask and access more than one application simultaneously.

The handset also features a physical QWERTY keyboard for efficient text entry and is the first ever Nseries phone to feature Nokia’s new Linux Maemo operating system.

why couldn't nokia tell us this on the 16th nov which was the last supposed release date??? why did they leave hundreds of thousands of people in the dark? poor service with yet another delay..... i dnt mind delays if official information and a viable reason is given but to have to read about it on a blog site a week later is unacceptable!

It is a "spoiling" tactic to put you off buying a competitor's phone. The N900 was to be "officially" available in October, then mid-November, end-November, 3rd December now 4th December.

People were pre-ordering as early as October. Of course Nokia had no intention of actually honouring these supposed "available" dates.

Only people who pre-ordered EARLY will get phones this side of Christmas. The majority of people will NOT be able to get a N900 until AFTER Christmas now. I guess end of January - February before the N900 is realisticly available. By this time many more "interesting" phones will be released by then.

I nearly pre-ordered a N900 a couple of weeks ago and now will not bother. I am going to wait until the new year and see what competitors are offering before I decide to buy an N900 or not.

As a phone it is quite expensive (compared to other similar specced phones) by the time it comes out other higher-specced phones will be available - e.g. Sony-Ericcson X10 (4-inch screen and 1Ghz processor running Android) or Motorola Droid.
