HTC Hero

Those who have been waiting to upgrade from Android 1.6 Donut, which is preinstalled on the HTC Hero can bypass the official routes and install Android 2.1 Éclair with a little help from hackers.

A French blogger recently revealed what appeared to be a Hero running Android 2.1, whetting the appetites of those already committed to the widely praised HTC smartphone.

Hackers have made the Android 2.1 ROM available online, although as with any unofficial software installation there are certain skills and a degree of bravery involved if you want to install the new operating system without wrecking your handset.

If you have the knowhow and courage to go through with the upgrade then Android 2.1 offers many improvements over previous versions, including integral support for Exchange, as well as YouTube and Facebook widgets.

Enhancements have also been made to the address book and various other important tweaks are included.

This completely unofficial upgrade route is not condoned or supported by any party, so those choosing to take the risk will likely void any warranties and be left on their own in the event of a hiccough. Extreme caution is advised.
