Mobile network Orange has released predictions that show that this Christmas could be the busiest ever in terms of text and picture messaging as people exchange their good tidings using their mobile phones.
Over Christmas and New Year there is usually a spike in the number of people texting one another and last year Orange had to deal with 100 million SMS (text) and one million MMS (image) messages on Christmas day alone. This statistic only takes into account the levels of messaging traffic on a single network and other UK networks are likely to be equally busy.
Orange believes that over Christmas 2009 it will have to handle 1.1 million picture messages this December 25th, up 10 per cent on the previous year. New Year is also likely to be busier than the last, with 106 million text messages flying between friends and family members as the clocks strike midnight.
Orange customers will be glad of the high levels of coverage offered by the network, with 99 per cent of the population covered by its GSM networks and 93 per cent by high speed 3G connectivity, which will make sending pictures even quicker.
