In an attempt to straddle the line between the new world of touchscreen technology and the established physical QWERTY keypad, it appears that a BlackBerry sporting both of these interface options will be emerging in the near future.

The new BlackBerry, which has been codenamed Dakota during its development, will apparently ditch the trackball and optical trackpad found on the likes of the 9700 Bold, requiring all navigation to be performed using the touchscreen.

Meanwhile the QWERTY keypad will be retained for typing messages and entering web addresses.

The transition from physical keys to touchscreen has not been an easy one for the BlackBerry brand to make, as the original BlackBerry Storm proved. This compromise between the two will satisfy long-time BlackBerry fans whilst appealing to the new generation who want touchscreens above all else.

Other inclusions for the Dakota include a new liquid lens technology for the digital camera which has been developed in partnership with Phillips.

This will allegedly increase the quality and versatility of the BlackBerry's photographic capabilities.

This new BlackBerry hybrid is still being developed, so may not appear in the UK until later in 2010.
