New research from the Nokia Research Centre (NRC) suggests that the Finnish manufacturer is close to developing the technology that will allow built-in radars to be used to detect movement and control the smartphones of the future.

See the radar technology in action here:

The wireless sensitivity to movement is produced when electromagnetic signals are beamed out from the phone and then bounce back from the user's limbs, allowing it to detect how fast you are moving and in which direction.

One suggested application of the technology is hands free volume adjustments from across the room, although there are many other things which would become possible if the technology is given time to develop.

Its creators say that it will work through clothes, so in the future there would be no need to pull your mobile from your pocket.

Of course the radar technology will probably find its way into other devices and industries, with its ability to measure speed being useful for athletes and its motion sensing capabilities easily applicable to automatic doors.
