With its sights set on the military market, the BIP-6000 from Bluebird is the most durable and resilient smartphone around, although this does come at the slight expense of its looks and weight.

There have been a few other hardcore mobile phones over the years, but on paper the BIP-6000 has them all trumped. It will work normally whether you are in freezing temperatures of -18 or boiling conditions of 55 degrees and it can be dropped from a height of nearly 2 metres onto solid steel quite a few times before it starts to get punch drunk and stop working properly.

The current BIP-6000 has been built around Android 1.5, but its manufacturer promises that 2.0 or 2.1 compatibility will be available soon.

This is a relatively well equipped mobile phone considering its resilient capabilities, with a 3.5 inch touch screen and various connectivity options including HSDPA and Wi-Fi.

Rather than opting to include a full physical QWERTY keypad as a landscape slide out interface, Bluebird has chosen to endow the BIP-6000 with a BlackBerry-style portrait QWERTY keypad.

The cost of this smartphone is as astonishing as its functions, with an expected £1200 price tag likely to put off all but those who actually need an indestructible Android phone.

To call this an "expensive phone" is to completely miss the point. This is not a phone primarily. It is a rugged pocket Pc with a fast processor and tons of other features - One of which is a phone.

No one buys this type of device as a phone. They buy it to run enterprise class software for their industry, while in the field. And oh. BTW. its also a phone.
