HTC HERO

The much-anticipated arrival of Android version 2.1 on the popular HTC Hero could be on track for a release at some point in March, according to an official announcement from HTC.

Although the Hero has won fans in the past for its impressive Sense interface, which HTC layered on top of the existing Android software, an update to the latest version of the operating system has been in the works for some time now.

HTC said that the update will benefit from a brand new social networking widget called Friend Stream. This will be likely to operate in a similar way to the MotoBLUR software from Motorola, by pulling in the various contacts and profiles for the Hero user into a single interface.

The update will also provide improved support for mail service Exchange, along with other as yet unknown delights.

The announcement may sound like good news, but UK Hero owners may have to wait a little longer, as only US network Sprint has said that it will be providing the update in time for mid-March.

Yeah! I can't wait! Although I'm fairly new to Android, it seems most apps require at least 2.0 to run them, so this is huge!

I have had my hero for about 2 months. The more I learn about this system, the more I'm getting frustrated. It's apparent that this update should've come along time ago.

I agree with you Tim. It should have come earlier. I got mine last year in November and ever since that HTC has kept saying it'll be due in December and then January and then February and now March. We'll see what's going to happen in March....

Yes I agree with you Sam. I got my Hero at the end of October and they have been hinting at the updates to 2.0 every month since. Maybe now the Nexus One is out, we might actually see this well overdue update very, very soon!!

It's not just a simple upgrade to 2.1 that is needed. They also need to re-build the SENSE UI to work around the 2.1 changes/features.

The Nexus One has a vanilla Android build that is different to the Desire's 2.1 inc SENSE build. That said, HTC should be more transparent about their timeline.
