A court case in which Motorola claimed that BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) had infringed five of its patented technologies without proper licensing has concluded in the UK, with RIM exonerated of all charges.

Motorola is still pursuing a similar case based in the US, but the fact that it has lost the fight in the UK must surely set a precedent for the proceedings taking place across the Atlantic.

A statement from RIM noted: "Motorola has been trying to compensate for its losses in the marketplace and its inability to sell its mobile division by resorting to court actions that are designed to help negotiate unreasonable royalty rates."

At this time, Motorola is said to be in the process of analysing the findings of the adjudicators in the UK and may appeal the decision if it is not completely satisfied. No further details on the US case have yet emerged.
