A team of modders has managed to get the HTC HD2 to work with an early build of Windows Phone 7 Series, leading some to suggest that an official update for the smartphone could yet be on the way.

The performance of the hack, which was completed by HTCPEdia user Tom Codon, is said to be impressive, although there are some issues with the graphics drivers that cause a little lag during certain operations.

However, Mr Codon claims that these are easily remedied and hopes that completely smooth Windows Phone 7 experience is achievable for the HD2.

In the hacked HD2 all of its connectivity options, including GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, are fully functional and even the web browser is up and running.

The biggest issue for hopeful HD2 owners is the fact that Microsoft says backwards compatibility with older Windows Mobile phones will not be a feature of Windows Phone 7 Series.

This is because of a strict set of hardware requirements, although the HD2 clearly has enough clout to power the new operating system.

Not going to happen. Ever. Microsoft is betting the ranch on WinMo 7, so why put it on a phone that'll be the best part of a year old by the time the new OS lands? Doesn't make sense.
