HTC Hero to get Android 2.1 in April

HTC HERO

The HTC Hero was one of the most popular Android-based smartphones of 2009 and now Orange and T-Mobile will be bringing an official update to bring the platform up to 2.1 on April 16th.

Various other European nations will benefit from the update earlier in the month, with the roll-out beginning on April 2nd.

However, if you have your HTC Hero on a 3 contract then you will have to hold on until April 22nd.

The HTC Legend is also on the way and its arrival with Android 2.1 onboard has made some people very excited.

Even so, if the HTC Hero is to get the same platform at a much lower price point, then it could easily tempt consumers to pick up the older mobile over the latest arrival.

The schedule for the HTC Hero Android 2.1 roll-out was first published on the XDA Developers forum.

This is brilliant news for me. But as business moves go, it's probably not the best ever on the part of HTC.

Wooooooohooooo. At last we're getting it. All the forums were speaking about March, but now it is dragged to April. Hopefully we will get it before May.

Okay, so this is for the UK HTC Hero, but what about the Sprint HTC Hero? There was an email that was leaked last week that stated information would be released regarding the roll-out of the 2.1 update in April, but no concrete time frame for the roll-out itself.

I really hope that the release schedules mentioned for the UK HTC Hero will be mirrored for the Sprint HTC Hero as well. Android 1.5 is looking really long in the tooth at this point in time.

HTC customer service emailed me a couple of weeks ago in response to issues and said the update would be out mid-March. I echo the sentiment that maybe we'll get it before May.

I was told my issues couldn't be resolved until the new update. Nice having a phone that doesn't do everything it's supposed to then being told to wait indefinitely until it can be fixed (and I sell the things). Bring on the update!

I'm selling my Hero on Ebay. I fell for last year's hype and got one - Bad move!!!! Even with the updates, it still won't be as slick as the iPhone.

And as for the new Google phone, tests in the mobile mags have put the Nexus at number 2!!! Guess what is still number 1? Yes, thats right - the iPhone!!!!

I don't thinks it's a bad business move. At the end of the day, the Hero is gonna move to the mid to low range tariffs and the Legend is high end. And although I love my Hero, it doesn't have the technical specs the Legend has.

And who else thinks downloading the apps to phone is really rubbish? We really need the ability to dl to sd. Winmo does it, so why can't Android?

    Try Apps2SD James ;-)

And if you really can't wait for a free update for your phone peeps then don't, root your phone and install one of the many scene 2.1 roms out there :D

Can't believe how many peeps moan about a phone they bought, yes it has its faults out of the box, but didn't you research into the phone before throwing hundreds of pounds at it???

Got an HTC Hero on Orange in the UK. It's 19 April and I'm still on V1.5. Anyone know how this works? There is no update on the HTC site and I've done a bit of searching on t'interweb but have not found anything. Are we supposed to get contacted by Orange via text or something with a link to a download page?

I am actually guessing it has been put back yet again for another couple of months. Please forgive the cynicism {I hope I am wrong though}.

This mess of getting/not-getting version 2.1 is a FINAL death nail in the coffin of Android. Google is a bigger loser in this than HTC. Think about it - will you ever buy a phone with Android in it? Apple is usually close to perfection - can't beat it.

@Ian Not that the media love the iPhone at all. As far as phones go nowadays, I'd have thought the HTC Desire would be EASILY the best. I don't have one, but given that all the iPhone improvements over the last couple of years have all been adding in things that it, in all fairness, should have had in the first place, it seems a better choice. It's all a matter of opinion, though. Maybe use your own head rather than take the media train when picking a phone.

PS: I have a Hero, and while the delay is REALLY annoying, I've been very happy with HTC's service normally - when it does come out I'm sure I'll have no complaints.
