The lure of newer smartphone platforms with large touchscreens and extensive app stores could prove to be too great for BlackBerry owners in the future, according to a new survey.

BlackBerrys used to hold sway over a significant proportion of the business market, but as rivals have surpassed them in terms of technology and style, manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) could be facing a mutiny.

A study by Crowd Science has discovered that 40 per cent of current BlackBerry owners are going to ditch their phones at the next upgrade window in favour of something from Apple.

Meanwhile a healthy 32 per cent would consider a Google Nexus One for their next mobile purchase.

Both Apple and Google will have more reason to celebrate, as the survey also found that 90 per cent of smartphone owners who currently get their kicks on the iPhone or with an Android-based mobile are not going to change allegiance any time soon.

Customer loyalty plays a big part in the success of any smartphone platform and with BlackBerry losing some of its key demographic to rivals, the end of its brand superiority could be in sight.

RIM is trying to make its phones seem cooler with those Love What You Do ads. But they'd be better off actually making cooler phones. Something a bit radical looking would change their image.
