What could be the world's first smartphone to sport the next mobile operating system from Microsoft has been officially unveiled by a representative from the firm.

The as-yet-unnamed mobile is manufactured by LG and is currently in the prototype stage of development. With a full QWERTY keypad it is a little bulkier than the current generation iPhone and although it has a touchscreen interface, there are still three physical keys on the front.

The LG smartphone will have a five megapixel camera and a 3.5mm headphone jack, as is to be expected these days.

Aaron Woodman turned the spotlight on the LG Windows Phone 7 Series mobile when he took it to a recording of Engadget's show on behalf of Microsoft.

Mr Woodman was fairly cautious in describing what his firm's new operating system would offer, sticking to a discussion of the LG smartphone's hardware.

However, he did hint that Microsoft was considering some kind of Mac compatibility, which could be interesting.

Not sure if LG coming to market with the first Windows Mobile 7 phone is actually that good for the OS' chances. LG might be king of the mid-range market, but smartphones? Not so much. If it's a stinker, people will be quick to damn the whole platform.
