The newly announced Motorola i1 will hold the honour of being the first Android-based mobile to feature push-to-talk functionality, essentially making it akin to an advanced walkie-talkie.

To go with this adventurous feature, Motorola has made the i1 a little bit hardier than other smartphones with a toughened glass screen that will deflect dust, scratches and dirt.

Standardised testing has shown that the handset will also take a military-grade beating from water, shocks and short drops.

The i1 is compatible with high capacity microSD memory cards, which will be useful as there is a five megapixel camera with video capturing capabilities around the back.

Motorola has said that its new tough phone challenger will not have 3G, but to compensate there will be Wi-Fi, which is set to help the phone hit the market at less than £133.

If Motorola manages to make this an entry-level Android option, it will be an appealing little smartphone for the mass market.

A release date has yet to be announced, but it should arrive within a couple of months.

No one in the UK wants push to talk. But for some reason it's massive in the States. Anyone care to tell me why exactly? Do people want to pretend they're in a 1970s cop show?

Because everyone in the US is stupid and likes to feel important. There should be a law that if you want to punch anyone in the face for using push to talk in public, you get a prize.

@TJ Looker It's quicker than a phone call & doesn't eat up your minutes...

Ive lived in the US my entire life. No one that I have ever met, besides my uncle who works in construction, uses push to talk. I don't know why they make such a big deal out of push to talk. No one uses it, for real.

@Ted Use your brain and to think instead of a paperweight. Some people actually use it for business.

TJ & Ted... both of you are ignorant... not only is it a business tool but we can communicate with others fast by voice and FREE around the glove with coworkers, friends or relatives by the push of a button, I recommend you get out of the box more often and do more research before you say a word. And don't be a hater just because you wish you could live in this AMAZING country!!

I love walkie-talkie because I can commnicate with family and friends in other countries from the US and it doesn't cost me more. Well, I just have to pay 5 dlls more in my plan, but thats nothing compare to all the benefits that I get with that feature...I really love it and I always look for phones that have the push to talk feature. Its not only for business and you can have private calls to. For those people that hate walkie-talkies its probably because some people like to be loud and let other people to hear their conversation, but you can make it private too and nobody has to know that you are having a walkie-talkie conversation.
