The number of people using smartphones to surf the internet is up by 13 per cent, according to the latest figures released by AdMob.

The research group's monthly Mobile Metrics report found that 48 per cent of mobile internet traffic was generated by smartphone owners, which is up from 35 per cent in the same period during 2009.

The number of people using Android smartphones and the iPhone is also on the rise, as Apple's mobile managed to account for 50 per cent of mobile internet use in February.

Google's platform made the biggest gains, jumping from two per cent in February 2009 to 24 per cent last month.

Nokia's Symbian platform is shown to be the biggest loser, with its previous traffic figures of 48 per cent falling to just 18 per cent.

Whilst these figures do not provide an accurate representation of smartphone market share, analysts believe that the large app stores which are present on the iPhone and Android platforms are driving the change in mobile data usage.
