Vodafone: Spanish HTC Magic virus is unique

The Malware-infected HTC Magic smartphones that shipped to Spanish Vodafone customers represent a one-off incident that will not be repeated internationally, the carrier has claimed.

Earlier this week, malicious software of multiple varieties was discovered by a Spanish anti-virus expert when unboxing an HTC Magic and it soon emerged that other brand new devices sold in the country were similarly compromised.

Although the files contained by the Magic were benign on the phone itself, if the user inadvertently transferred them over to their PC some serious damage could occur.

A spokesperson for Vodafone UK told TechRadar: "The device involved in the incident was purchased by a customer of Vodafone Spain and is currently being investigated.

"The early indications are that this was an isolated local incident."

The spokesperson went on to say that Vodafone took the security and safety of its customers very seriously and also highlighted the fact that no UK HTC Magic owner had been subject to similar issues.

    How can they say that for sure? They can't is the answer. Expect to see more and more of this kind of thing in months to come.
