The Android-based Xperia X10 is going to move from version 1.6 to version 2.1 of the software, according to an announcement from Sony Ericsson.

Xperia X10 owners will have to wait until September for the update, which will bring the phone in line with the likes of the HTC Desire.

Multitouch functions will be integrated into the update, which will be welcomed by users who are limited to single finger recognition at the moment.

This news dispels rumours which suggested the X10 could not offer multitouch because of inadequate hardware support.

Sony Ericsson has only recently launched the Xperia X10, but it has already been made to look a little outmoded when compared with new arrivals such as the HTC Legend, which is cheaper and has Android 2.1 on-board.

The Xperia X10 packs a mean selection of high-end hardware, including a monster four- inch screen, a 1GHz processor and an 8.1 megapixel camera.

Why wait until September when 2.1 is available now? By that time a lot of potential buyers will have gone elsewhere and by elsewhere I mean bought an HTC phone.

Probably because the update is not the straightforward upgrade to 2.1, as it has to take into account the SE skin applied over the top of the exiting android 1.6 interface. God knows why it's going to take 5 months though!

Sony Ericsson should employ more engineers and focus on Android. The iPhone is 3 years old now.

The best software isn't the only selling point of a phone. You have to take into consideration its design too. You could have the fastest smartphone in the world, but if was housed in an ugly shell would you really want to buy it?

Xperia 10 is a nice phone visually and some of the features far outweigh those of the iPhone. I would say the x10 is designed for people that want a good smartphone with a brilliant camera.
