Version 2.2 of Google's Android smartphone platform will be released in May, with the Google Nexus One reportedly in line to be the first phone to get the update.

Rumours of the imminent appearance of the new iteration of the platform surfaced after fan site Android and Me logged mobiles using Android 2.2 surfing the internet.

This almost certainly indicates that Google is in the process of testing Android 2.2 in the run-up to an official launch.

The Google developer conference, which is being held in San Francisco in late May, is being touted as the event at which Android 2.2 will arrive.

Observers are also suggesting that the Nexus One will probably be the first smartphone to benefit from an Android 2.2 upgrade.

This would definitely give it the edge it needs over the near-identical HTC Desire in the software department, making the Sense interface a little less of a talking point.

Android 2.1 will be a relatively new platform to most users, with the HTC Desire and its cheaper sibling the Legend only recently bringing it to the UK.

Meanwhile, many will still be using Android 1.6, which is behind the workings of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.

The Nexus One will need a bit more help than that to compete with HTC's phones. Why would anyone choose vanilla Android over HTC Sense ? Especially since 2.1 will come to Desire and Legend soon enough

Wish they would release it for the hero first of all!

@Marionation Actually the desire is running 2.1 already. problem is that we might be at the mercy of HTC in getting an update. Hopefully that is not the case.

Google has a major benefit in that they only need to support one phone and have control over the OS that other phones use. While it would be technically "evil", they could steer development towards their phone and push updates.

Having said all that, the desire is an awesome, awesome (yes awesome squared) phone. and I am glad I chose it instead of the nexus. Although a free nexus like the ones handed out to attendees at google dev would have been nice.

The nexus one several advantages over desire. First dual mics allow noise cancelling. This not only makes your voice crystal clear to those you hear, but it makes the voice operation of the phone much more successful even in noisy environments, as the google processors only deal with a nice clean sound wave from your voice when trying to work out what you are saying.

Secondly, google stuck their name on it. They will make sure this thing gets the updates it needs - an example is the rumour that nexus one will get android 2.2 first.

Thirdly, android 2.2 is rumoured to unlock several goodies that the nexus one has been hiding away, such as fm receiver/transmitter, wireless N protocol...nice
