HTC's Desire is the best phone yet to employ Google's Android operating system, according to a poll of smartphone fans.

In a consumer study conducted by Tech Radar 47 per cent of participants said that they would be getting an HTC Desire as soon as their finances allowed.

Meanwhile, eight per cent of users said that Google's Nexus One was their top phone in the Android arena, whilst eight per cent voted for the HTC Legend.

The HTC Desire is notable for being universally available on all of the UK's major mobile networks. Everyone from O2 to 3 offers the much sought-after smartphone to customers.

Interestingly, the poll also found that just 12 per cent of people quizzed plan to stick with their iPhone this year, suggesting that Android phones are fast replacing Apple mobiles as the tech types' handsets of choice.

Have Android phones replaced the iPhone as the tech fans' handset of choice? Seems so: http://bit.ly/9jdP3E #android #technology

Try doing this poll in two months time - i.e once iPhone 4G has landed - and you'll get a very different result. This tells us nothing other than that people are inclined to buy whatever phone is deemed to be hot at that particular moment.

@potentate, M8 in 2 months time the iPhone 3gs will be a relic and the iPhone 4g will be collecting dust on the shelves due to the HTC Evo. It'll be around this time that Mr Jobs will prob throw his toys completely out of his pram.

Isnt it strange that the Apple iPhone Sheep manage to find their way onto an article called 'HTC Desire voted best android phone'. Anyone would think that they are worried about new phones comming onto the market. All reviews I've read on the HTC Desire have comments from one or two sheep defending their ageing iPhone and suggesting the 4G will be amazing!

If it's so great why do they come onto HTC reviews spouting rubbish about iPhones?
The sheep have had their day. Now it's time for real smartphones to rule!!

Thank You, Jason. I have always wondered that. I'm sure the iPhone will be what it should have been last year and still won't be as good as my Nexus or any Android that drops this year. Damn fanboys.

After having used both the iPhone 3Gs and the Desire, I can safely say that the Desire beats the iPhone hands down. It's faster, more responsive, has a better screen and the browser is miles better. It's also easier to use, already has useful apps (although it could do with some more), has replaceable battery, expandable memory, uses a sensible mini USB connector, the battery lasts longer and you can transfer files from a PC, etc. etc.

The pluses are numerous. Apple have not addressed any of the criticisms of the original iPhone other than making it slightly faster. That's about it, as far as I can tell. It's much too restrictive to be useful as a proper smartphone.

The iPhone will not be called the iPhone 4G because 4G the hasn't been invented yet. I am gona buy the HTC legend. It beats both of them in looks and the software is brill.

It's not as fast as the desire, but it is a better phone to use. I think htc make way better phones for much cheaper, but no-one realises it.

I came here because I wanted to know what was the best Android phone as it's something that interests me.

However I think it's unfair to attack someone for commenting on the iPhone after it was brought up in the article itself.

There are a lot of people that like Android phones, their openness, multiple manufacturers, etc... And a lot of people that like the iPhone.

My comment isn't really one for either camp - and it's not meant to praise or slate either side. Individuals will make up their minds as to which is best for them and their needs....

However I would like to point out that there is an obvious bias in the original article. It states that "just 12 per cent of people quizzed plan to stick with their iPhone this year, suggesting that Android phones are fast replacing Apple mobiles..." This isn't the case at all - with a new iPhone being released, the other 78 per cent may be looking to switch to an Android handset, the new iPhone, or even another type of smartphone.
