The Motorola Dext is now half price on Orange pay as you go mobile phone deals, bringing Android smartphone functionality ever closer to the mass market.

Network provider Orange has cut the cost of the Dext to £149, which is a significant step down from the £299 it was at just a few days earlier.

Pay as you go customers looking for a cheap Android-based handset would previously have been stuck with either the T-Mobile Pulse or the similarly affordably priced HTC Tattoo.

However, now the Dext has arrived in the same price bracket, offering a full slide-out QWERTY keypad and the excellent MotoBlur social networking service.

The Dext benefits from a good selection of connectivity options for mobile internet access and also has an integrated GPS antennae to help with navigation and geotagging pictures before uploading them to social networking sites.

Right. But the HTC Desire is only £25 per month on the contract. And that's state of the art Android tech. Why would you want a Dext, man?

How is £25 per month cheap? It works out at £450 if it's 18 months. Or even worse: £600 for 24 months.

I know the Desire is a better phone in many ways to the Dext, but it also doesn't have a physical keyboard. On pay and go, the Desire is £399.99. So as an affordable handset the Dext is better value for money.
