Nokia camera phones' to match SLR quality'

Nokia is prepping the first camera phones which offer the same level of image quality as stand-alone digital SLR models, according to the company's Executive Vice President.

Nokia has catered to the needs of photography fanatics in the past with its partnership with Carl Zeiss on its higher end camera phones.

Now, the Finnish phone giant is going to take this a step further with a series of devices that Anssi Vanjoki claims will make expensive, dedicated digital cameras obsolete.

Mr Vanjoki told the Reuters news agency: "There will be no need to carry around those heavy lenses. It will not take long, less than a year, when phones can record HD quality video and you can transfer it directly to your HD television set."

Clearly Mr Vanjoki is talking about the same level of HD video around which HTC is also known to be working, with support for 1080p recording and image sensors that are of a professional quality.

Nokia's current smartphones are no slouches when it comes to video capture and still photography, although gunning for the Single Lens Reflex (SLR) market might be a little ambitious.

    Right sure. But aren't the megapixel wars supposed to be over? People aren't really that bothered about having a high-end camera in their phone any more.

    Nokia's money would be better spent on marketing and developing the Ovi store - it's apps that folks want now.
