The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2, which never appeared in the UK amid rumours of troublesome glitches, is getting a significant software update.

Sony Ericsson has confirmed that it is providing brand new firmware for the smartphone, activating features that include video calling via 3G and FM radio tuning.

The X2 runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 and the firmware update also brings better stability to the platform, as well as performance-enhancing tweaks.

Windows Mobile 6.5 is known for its clunky touchscreen support, but Sony Ericsson has apparently ironed out most of the problems and made the homescreen system far slicker in the update.

The onscreen QWERTY keypad should also offer a more responsive experience.

All of these updates are largely irrelevant in the UK as the Xperia X2 never made it to the market, since Sony Ericsson and its network partners decided to hold off until the Xperia X10 was ready.

There is a chance that the new firmware might encourage some providers to stock the X2 as a cheaper WinMo alternative, tiding consumers over until Windows Phone 7 becomes the new standard.
