Acer has lifted the lid on its new Stream smartphone, which is already being touted as the mobile to rival the HTC Desire for the crown of the ultimate Android mobile.

Running the latest 2.1 version of Google's operating system, the Acer Stream has a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen that matches the Desire's display and sports all the standard connectivity options, including 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS.

The onboard five megapixel camera can shoot video in high definition, which is something that the HTC Desire cannot match at this point in time. The Stream also offers an HDMI output so that users can review your clips on your HD TV.

The same 1GHz processor employed in HTC's flagship Android phone is also onboard the Stream and Acer has provided 2GB of internal storage as standard, with the option to top this up with a microSD memory card.

The Stream will probably be snapped up by UK networks shortly and it could be an attractive alternative to the high-end Android smartphones from HTC. However, to really stand out it will need to have a user interface that measures up to Sense, which is a tough challenge.

Nice one. The Stream sounds like it rocks. But HTC has got the marketing muscle these days. So it'll probably never get beyond a cult following.
