Google Nexus One owners will soon be getting the latest version of Android, after the search giant confirmed that it would begin rolling out version 2.2 of its smartphone operating system.

The roll-out of Android 2.2, or Froyo as it is also known, is set to be incremental, so UK users may have to wait a few weeks to get their hands on it.

However, in the US many owners of Google's debut handset will have been pleasantly surprised to see it arrive as an over-the-air update.

Android 2.2 is being hailed as a much faster edition than 2.1 and its predecessors and the Nexus One models that were handed out to the media during Google's launch of the smartphone back in January are likely to be the first to receive the update, according to TechCrunch.

Although many tech fans had chosen the HTC Desire or Legend over the Nexus One because of the exclusive Sense interface, mobiles based on HTC's augmentations will have to wait a lot longer to get version 2.2 of Android, which could make the Nexus One look a lot more attractive, at least for the moment.

How predictable: Google's own phone, the Nexus One is getting 2.2 first. Probs too late to add sales tho'.

Why shouldn't Nexus one owners get it first? Carriers need time to make any needed customizations; Google does not for the Nexus One.

The Nexus One is getting it first, not because it's "Google's Own Phone" but because it runs stock Android and has no carrier branding. This means the update does not need to be altered in any way before being pushed out.
