The HTC Desire smartphone is set to get a software update, bringing Android 2.2 to its owners, it has been confirmed.

HTC has announced that all of its current Android-based smartphone range will be getting version 2.2 at some point, but the Desire is set to be the first of the bunch.

"We are working closely with Google and our other partners to ensure we have the earliest access to everything we need to provide a complete and solid Sense experience on Froyo," said HTC in a press release.

The release dates for these updates have not, as yet, been finally confirmed because work is ongoing, but HTC has committed to getting them out in the second half of 2010.

This announcement essentially states that the likes of the HTC Legend and the upcoming HTC Wildfire will also get Android 2.2.

It is to be hoped that the transition will not take as long as the arrival of Android 2.1 on the HTC Hero.

Yeah..after those delays on Hero, who's going to believe you HTC?
Let's just go for iPhone 4G, or choose brands other than HTC!

HTC really annoys me. I've had the HTC hero for 7 months now and i still won't get 2.1 until june, or probably july knowing HTC.

Now they decide to dish out 2.2 to desire owners and they're already on 2.1. So frustrating. Once my contract is over, I'm NEVER going with HTC again.

    @Alex,

I feel your frustration, but don't forget, porting from Android 1.5 to 2.1 is a lot harder than 2.1 to 2.2. I don't know the architecture of SenseUI, but I imagine major platform shifts are harder to manage, by all accounts 2.1 to 2.2 can be very easy.

One thing all Android users can't slate the the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad for, is that when OS 4 comes out, it comes out for everyone THAT DAY.

On Android, its the T-Mobile G series and the Nexus One then ... everyone else...maybe!

I think some ppl need to get over themselves. HTC isn't obliged to give Hero owners this update and most ppl who bought the phone probably didn't think that far ahead anyway. You're going to get it anyway. It's just a matter of when.

Same for me guys, my next phone will be a Iphone. My HTC Tattoo was a great disappointment.

HTC has no respect for his customers and the Android 1.6 was not up to my expectations. With a Iphone you get the updates for years while most of the Android phones never receive them.

Happy to hear the HTC Legend will get the Android 2.2 update. Many countries are still selling the HTC Legend and some countries just started selling them not long ago (folks like that unibody design).

Without the Android 2.2 update, many people will simply opt for a newer phone instead of the Legend. I seriously don't think HTC would want millions of HTC Legends still sitting on the shelves unsold. I believe the Android 2.2 update will help push for a sold-out HTC Legend!

If you didn't like your phone's original software, why didn't you send it back and get something else? These companies are not obliged to provide you with free updates - they sold you a finished product.

You should count yourselves lucky you are getting an update at all. The reason Apple provide updates is they have already charged you for them - $50 a month for 2 years.

HTC Legend is still new and selling at retail stores worldwide. So, it just makes business sense for HTC to give buyers the latest OS available on their phones. I heard Android 2.2 is faster, more efficient, and comes with new bells and whistles.

Agreed. That's why I held off buying a new phone 'till the Desire rolled out.

Must say I love HTC and despise Apple. The Desire is an awesome piece of kit and easily brushes aside the iPhone 4. Those of you upset with HTC must come to terms that you have an "old" model phone, therefore your upgrade to Nexus One or Desire will put that smile back on your face! Nexus One or Desire? Hmmmm Desire does it for me ;)

@BenAtRKUK The apple OS that's coming out (0S4) is indeed going to be available for all iPhones. But what the fine print says is that not all the iPhones will be getting all the features. So only ipnone 4 gets os4. The rest get os4, 50 - 80%, practically translating to OS 3.50 to 3.80

I am a very proud owner of the HTC Desire. It is by far the best up-to-date phone and wipes the floor with the iPhone. I have both.

The phone is so fast that it is stress free. THE DESIRE IS THE NUMBER 1!!!!!!

My wife has an iPhone so I've seen OS4, which is very nice and now does many of the things my HTC Desire could already do. I've seen a lot of comment about Android 2.2 but the only 'must have' feature as far as I'm concerned is the ability to store and run apps from the SD card.

Everything else will be nice but my phone already does what I want it to and does it well. That particular feature will deal with my one major giggle: memory low.

The point is: HTC can't promise anything. The Hero update being postponed again and again made for a really a BAD experience. So, to believe or not to believe is the question.

As a new Legend user, I find the phone nice and I like the control. The one thing that REALLY frustrated me is buying a phone that does not do bluetooth voice recognition. It is illegal here to use a phone while driving without handsfree and I can't do that with my "new" andriod phone.

I called HTC and they said they know it is a limitation in 2.1 and when 2.2 gets rolled out, which is gonna happen, it will fix that. That is really the only feature I am missing.

HTC has released Android 2.1 for HERO! At least for South-east Asia, anyway. Hehe. This is a good sign that HTC is committed to its customers. So there is hope for Desire to get an upgrade too.

HTC Desire is slim, sexy and fits like a glove in the hand. It has an almost animal responsiveness feel to the screen and vibrates in such a way when in my pocket that I feel 'oOOoo.. !!'

But on a serious note, a friend of mine has been beta testing 2.2 on the HTC Desire and says it is nothing short of amazing. Almost like buying a new phone. And you can reinstall apps to the SD card on his beta release.

HTC Desire.. you'd be mad not to!

@NewAndriod User I was not best pleased with the lack of voice dial. But if you install the Google Search app, you'll find that you can effectively dial hands-free so long as you have a static phone holder in your car.

Do you know when FroYo will be available for Google Nexus one and HTC Desire ? I mean, when will the phones update automatically? I want to buy an HTC Nexus one or HTC Desire but don't know if I should wait (and if you can give me reasons why choosing Desire or Nexus One, it would help me more!!!).

And if i buy a Desire can I disable HTC SENSE and then will my phone update exactly as a Nexus One (it means without waiting that HTC allows the phone to update)? Thank you so much for your help to a confused one :-)

I have just this week changed to HTC Desire from Iphone 3gs. I wont be going back to hiring an apple phone which is what your doing with the Iphone because you can only do what apple want you to do with it. At least with the Android phones software you can have a play around and install what you want.

@BenAtRKUK How can you compare an os-update used by numerous hardware-manufactureRs to the iOS? What's the point of it anyway??!!

It wont make much sense business wise to promise update for previous models. The whole idea is that people should buy new phones and not keep the old one. So I think these are all roumors.. keep dreaming and start saving for a new phone if you want this update..
