Apple has gone on the defensive in the wake of recent sales statistics which claimed to show the number of Android devices sold in the US had overtaken that of the iPhone.

Research firm NPD published these interesting findings earlier in the week, which have since been dubbed misleading by Apple.

Android mobile phone sales accounted for 28 per cent of the total number of smartphones sold in the first three months of the year, whilst the iPhone was responsible for 21 per cent, according to NPD.

Industry experts were as taken aback as Apple, with most of the opinion that the iPhone would manage to retain its second place in the US smartphone market behind Research in Motion (RIM).

NPD gathered its data from 150,000 respondents via an online survey, which Apple is now claiming to be unrelated to real life sales figures.

Globally the statistics from multiple sources show that the iPhone is almost certainly leading Android-based mobiles by a significant margin.

Apple may have spoken out against the statistics, but it has not countered the claims with any hard evidence to the contrary. The official figures are still some months away from being published.

@Jonathan Whatever, mate. Let's see how the phone market stacks up in three months time. Android is a good rival. But top dog? Not in this lifetime. Or any another one

Closed software is in danger of extinction. And most of the world will be happy. It's just natural. Companies that are born and are still alive because of closed property software are in danger of extinction too.

@three months...how short-sighted. By 2020 many will say "remember apple and microsoft?"

If you compare apples to apples (no pun intended), then Apple is correct.

Android OS is a MOBILE PLATFORM for use in consumer electronics (the bulk of which are cellphones; HTC, Google, Samsung, etc). That is changing as it moves towards tablets, and other portables. iPhone OS is a MOBILE PLATFORM, initially found on the iPhone but has already moved to other potables; iPod Touch and iPad. Its easy for Google to just focus on a segment and declare themselves ahead, BUT that is misleading.

Currently the iPhone OS far outnumbers and outpaces the Android OS. It's funny how a short-sighted and misleading report like this is released and everyone just repeats it from tech blogs to CNN. Nobody questions it or does any research. Tells you something about the overall intelligence level of this country.
