An update that brings the HTC Hero up to date with the latest version of the Google Android operating system has been launched.

The first users to benefit from the update will be those in the US who happen to be on the Sprint network, many months after Android 2.1 arrived and HTC executives promised that the Hero would be getting an update.

HTC has not only bumped up the base software to version 2.1, but it has bundled the augmented version of its Sense interface in with the package, which means that the Hero will be on a par with the current smartphone line up including the Desire and the Legend.

UK users are probably going to have to stick with Android 1.5 for at least a few more days, because although the Hero update has launched in the US, there is no sign of it over here.

HTC is probably in the process of preparing the UK version and getting the native network providers on board to make sure that the update is distributed without a hitch.

I wouldn't bank on us getting this soon, TBH. HTC has made such a pig's ear of this. They overpromised basically - the first thing you're taught not to do as a retailer.

Well, it's put me of having another android phone when my contract expires. Back to iPhone, I think. At least you get the updates with Apple, unlike android, where depending what phone u got depends if you get an update.

My partner has the magic and that's stuck on 1.6. Shame really cause Google android is amazing, but the phone providers are gonna ruin it, especially HTC.

I am not holding my breath. I doubt it will ever come out for UK people.

Well you were fully aware of what version came with your hero when you purchased it. Yeah I'm annoyed too all these new models are out running the latest os and my hero is *old*.

But Hell it's still an amazing phone and thanks to HTC it's going to get even better. Don't rush a development, especially one that is to be re-developed for multiple hardware configurations. Wait and be happy. It's not going to be buggy or require constant patch updates.

The hero is an awesome phone, 2.1 can only make it better! The only thing that would ruin it is a buggy release of android 2.1! Have patience!
