The Motorola Flipout Android-based smartphone is launching next month, it has been claimed, bringing a quirky new approach to phones using Google's mobile phone platform.

The Motorola Flipout is fairly unique because it is hinged in one corner, with the top half swivelling sideways to reveal a full QWERTY keypad.

The nature of the Flipout's design means that it is completely square and uses the hybrid touchscreen and QWERTY combination that has been adopted by many of Motorola's Android-based smartphones.

The Motorola Flipout will be available in feminine pink, business-like black and natural green. Android 2.1 will be on-board and the MotoBlur user interface (UI) is laid on top of the standard platform to make social networking more accessible.

Inside a 700MHz processor will be running the show and a 3.1 megapixel camera will provide some basic picture-taking capabilities, according to HDBLog.

No news about the pricing or network partnerships for the Flipout has appeared yet, but the June release date seems to be a relatively concrete estimate.

Looks bonkers frankly. But at least it's distinct from the hordes of me-too HTC rip-offs. A bit of fresh thinking is just the ticket.
