The high definition video recording capabilities of the Google Nexus One have been revealed thanks to a software hack, opening up the option to shoot video in 720p.

With the arrival of the iPhone 4 and its own 720p video capture feature, it is slightly surprising to see that an official update that unlocks the full potential of the Nexus One has not been made available by Google.

Users of the XDA Developers forum managed to modify the Nexus One's software in order to get the high definition recording feature working, although this alpha stage release is not likely to impress too many people.

Google has not stated that it has any plans to release official 720p recording support, although it would make sense to add it to the Nexus One in order to make it more competitive with the arrival of the iPhone 4.

Maybe if Google has been upfront about this it would've helped the Nexus One get the sales it was expected to have? Can't see why they didn't. That just left it open for the Desire and Legend to clean up.
