An update for the HTC Desire will bring Android 2.2 to the handsets at some point in Q3, it has been announced.

HTC officially confirmed a timeframe for FroYo to replace the 2.1 edition of the software currently running on the Desire just days after Google Nexus One owners were told that they would be receiving Android 2.2 via an over-the-air update.

A spokesperson for the company told Recombu: "We are working hard with our partners to update the HTC Sense experience on Froyo and distribute it to our customers as fast as possible.

"We expect to release updates for several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire beginning in Q3."

The HTC Desire has been the only real contender to take on the Apple iPhone since its launch earlier in the year and a refresh of its operating system should help it stack up well against the iPhone 4 with its brand new iOS 4 platform.

In recent months, HTC has run into problems with updating its ageing Hero handsets with newer versions of Google's Android operating system and was forced to repeatedly delay the upgrade.

The issues were related to ensuring compatibility with HTC's Sense custom user interface.
