Owners of the huge-selling HTC Hero will be upgraded to the 2.1 version of Google’s operating system, AKA Eclair, by the end of June at the latest.

The update to the latest available version of the platform, which was first unveiled in November 2009, was originally due to arrive on the Hero back in March.

Its arrival was delayed by problems with getting HTC’s Sense overlay to work with the 2.1 edition. Speculation was also rife that there were issues with getting the update to transmit over the air.

However, HTC has now pledged that the new iteration “will be released by the end of June” for Hero users and will arrive in two stages.

A statement from the South Korean company read: “The upgrade will come in two parts, the first of which will roll out from this week and will be detected when the Hero next automatically checks for software updates.

“The second part of the update will follow towards the end of the month. “

HTC has advised anyone undertaking the second part of the upgrade to back up all data and use a WiFi connection to avoid incurring charges for excess mobile internet use.

Features that Éclair will bring to the phone include live wallpapers, additional home screens, new widgets and a 3D photo gallery.

Released last year, the Hero won a slew of awards in the technology press and is widely regarded as the handset that took HTC from a niche concern to a brand with mass-market appeal.

As well as offering buyers thousands of free and paid for apps to download from the Android Market, the Hero is home to a 3.2-inch touchscreen, five megapixel camera and HSDPA support for a fast mobile internet experience.

22nd of June and still no sign. I will eat my hat if it comes before July. I have already made a pledge not to buy an HTC phone again over this issue. Don't promise what you can't deliver.
