After initiating the pre-order process for the iPhone 4, the resultant tidal wave of traffic to Apple's online store caused its website to temporarily crash yesterday.

Thousands of customers attempting to place their order for the phone on Apple's UK site were unable to do so, as the weight of interest had overstretched its service and an error message was the only thing visible to eager shoppers.

The iPhone 4 is going to arrive in the UK next week and its simultaneous launch on all major networks, including Vodafone and Orange, is likely to cause as much of a stir on the high street as its pre-order service has online.

Apple has launched some very popular hardware in the past, but the excitement surrounding the iPhone 4 is extending beyond its hardcore fan base and infecting mainstream consumers, perhaps accounting for the rush on its online pre-order service.

User numbers will probably have subsided sufficiently to make placing a pre-order possible at this time.
