Britons who pre-ordered their iPhone 4 smartphones from the Apple online store have been given a formal apology from the firm after it confirmed that they could be in for a long wait for the delivery.

After being faced with "the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day," Apple admitted that there could be over seven days' delay for anyone who pre-ordered the iPhone 4 online.

This means that rather than getting the new mobile on its June 24th release date, it will not turn up until July.

Apple stated: "Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4 [...] resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions.

"Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologise to everyone who encountered difficulties," said Apple in a statement to the press."

After the pre-order flood crashed Apple's site, it did not take long for the expected arrival date to jump to July 2nd.

Hopefully, the widespread network support for the iPhone 4 will mean that many people will be able to get their hands on the mobile on its official day of release.

I appreciate that there was loads of traffic. But it's still a bit rubbish that Apple wasn't prepared for it. But typical of the contempt they show for their hardcore fans.
