The revamped Kindle app now supports multimedia content embedded into eBooks, including audio and video files. At the moment there are only 13 eBooks that support this type of content, each costing around £7.

Five of the multimedia books on offer are travel guides written by Rick Stevens and there are also titles relating to birdcalls, knitting and Franklin D Roosevelt.

Travel publisher Bill Newlin told CNet: "In the new Kindle Edition with audio/video of Rick Stevens' London, the embedded walking tours allow customers to listen to Rick as they explore the sites of London."

The most compelling title in the new line up may well be the Beatles songbook, which includes instructions as to how to play famous songs from their back catalogue on the guitar.

Amazon is to work with publishers in order to ensure that this multimedia eBook experience is more than a gimmick and it has planned several more additions which will join this small library of titles in the near future.

Dorothy Nicholls of Amazon said: "This is just the beginning. We look forward to seeing what authors and publishers create for Kindle customers using the new functionality of the Kindle apps."
