The growing Sony Ericsson Xperia range has today got a new addition in the shape of the X8, which teams Android smartphone functionality with some impressive media playback capabilities.

The Android platform powering the X8 will be version 1.6, which is looking a little long in the tooth considering that version 2.2 is now the standard for most other manufacturers.

Features of the X8 include a three inch touchscreen with a decent resolution of 480x320. It also has a perfectly adequate 600MHz processor, which should be able to handle Android 1.6 with ease.

A 3.2 megapixel camera and a universal audio socket mean that the X8 will be a decent multimedia mobile and Sony Ericsson has said that GPS navigation will be possible using its Wisepilot software.

When the Xperia X8 goes on sale in the coming weeks it will have a 2GB microSD memory card included in the retail package. Five different colours of the X8 will be launched, although the standard black does not number amongst them, suggesting that the youth market is being directly targeted with this smartphone.

It will be interesting to see where the X8 falls into the market, as it is larger than the X10 Mini but could well arrive at a similar price point.

The X10 was/is a cool phone. The best from SE in ages. But can't see to much point to the X8. If you want a slimmed down X10, wouldn't you just buy the X10 Mini?
