British Airways (BA) has launched an iPhone app to allow its passengers to replace physical tickets and boarding passes with a virtual alternative and speed up the check-in process.

The Mobile Boarding Passes app displays a unique barcode on the iPhone's screen, which can be scanned at the airport to let you breeze through to your seat when you get to the gate.

The software also allows users to gain access to a decent array of additional information, including the right check-in times and the expected departure and arrival times of a given flight, with updates making sure that the information is accurate.

BA's app is initially only available to passengers travelling between Heathrow and Edinburgh, although by September it will be compatible with every domestic service that the carrier operates.

To take advantage of Mobile Boarding Passes, iPhone users must be a member of BA's Executive Club.

Nice idea and eco-friendly too. But why is this only for business class customers? Does BA think they're the only ppl with iPhones?

How expensive is it to join the Executive club? It's a very nice idea. They should expand this for international services as well.

@James Kelso @Stan. It's not just for business class passengers, it's for anyone who is a member of the Executive Club, which is their frequent flier scheme and is free to join.

That's wonderful. Can it work for someone who wants to change his ticket? when will it start for the international flyers?
