Google has updated the mapping capabilities of Android smartphones, with the native maps application getting a few new features and tweaks.

The biggest improvement has been made to the way in which you find local destinations, with a dedicated Places icon appearing to help when searching for locations to visit.

Also new to the app is an augmented Place Pages section which brings it in line with its recently updated desktop counterpart.

Alongside this, Google has made it easier to tag your favourite places using the mapping application and, of course, there is still support for searching either via text input or through the voice search function for hands-free navigation.

Any Android user with version 1.6 or upwards will be able to download Google Maps for Mobile 4.4 via the Android Market.

Google has continued to keep its core apps, including the maps software, up to date in recent times. The latest revamp is the sixth in as many months.
