HTC is to use Super LCD (SLCD) displays in its current and next generation smartphones, in a bid to produce handsets with screens that outshine the iPhone 4's Retina Display.

The Taiwanese mobile maker has confirmed that updated versions of the Nexus One and Desire handsets will be launched with their AMOLED displays ditched in favour of SLCD alternatives because the supply of AMOLED screens from Samsung has been inadequate.

Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer of HTC, said: "The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand.

"The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC's current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance."

News of HTC's plans comes as Apple is allegedly having supply problems of its own, as Korean manufacturer LG unable to keep up with demand for LED backlit displays which are used in the iPad.
