Nokia to persist with Symbian on N Series mobiles?

Suggestions that Nokia will abandon the Symbian operating system for its top of the range NSeries smartphones have been refuted by the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Markets at the Finnish phone giant.

Last week, the company appeared to indicate that the future of the N Series lay firmly with the MeeGo operating system, but Anssi Vanjoki has now seemingly contradicted this edict.

A blog post penned by Mr Vanjoki stated: "Symbian and MeeGo are the best software for our smartest devices. As such, we have no plans to use any other software. The Nokia N8 will be our only NSeries device on Symbian^3.

"Of course, we 'never comment on future products', but a Symbian^4 NSeries device is a strong possibility. A very strong possibility."

Symbian has been the bane of Nokia smartphones in recent times and it looks set to continue with the launch of Symbian 3.

Even die-hard N Series fans are not convinced the N8 will be able to compete with the likes of the iPhone 4 if its own platform has one foot in the past.

Mr Vanjoki addressed other rumours in his blog and dismissed the idea that Nokia is going to launch a mobile based on the Android operating system.

    Oh dear. Symbian is a dead duck. The sooner Nokia realises this, the better. Adopting Maemo would get people excited about the Nokia NSeries again. Instead it'll retain it's glitchy, over-complex image. Shame.
