BlackBerry manufacturer Research in Motion (RIM) has created a video to outline the main features of the new BlackBerry 6 operating system (OS).

Amongst the functions that receive attention is the magnification tool that lets you enhance letters and symbols one by one, together with a search tool that trawls through everything stored on the smartphone.

These have been rightly identified as similar to enhancements offered by Apple's recently released iOS 4 platform, but RIM has also included some original concepts.

The multimedia player has been improved to make controlling playback far more manageable and the instant messaging software is easier on the eye, as is the news feed reader.

BlackBerry 6 follows in the footsteps of its major competition by integrating social networking sites into a single interface that does not require app switching. This essentially means that the likes of Twitter and Facebook can be accessed alongside one another.

RIM is gearing up to launch the first smartphones based on BlackBerry 6 and this range could include a tablet device in addition to traditional smartphones.

Backwards compatibility with older mobiles is also expected, although as with the release date, no official information has been forthcoming.

Looks cool as hell. Maybe RIM aren't out the game after all. Still need to give their fones a bit of a design rethink, tho'.

How can this work on the non-touch blackberries?? It only works on the touch ones!
