VoIP service Skype has released version 1.1 of its mobile app designed for the Symbian platform, bringing with it several improvements over the original.

The good news is that downloading the update will be less of a strain on data tariffs, as it is only 10MB in size, which is considerably slimmer than the first version of Skype.

The best way to download the app would be via a Wi-Fi connection, provided owners Symbian smartphones have this ability.

The Skype app now integrates instant messaging support for running simultaneous chats and it can even enable multi user conversations to involve all users' friends at once.

The app also supports the transmission of multimedia messages, including video and picture content.

As long as you have a Nokia smartphone based on Symbian S60 3rd or 5th edition you will be able to download and use the new Skype app.

Sony Ericsson mobiles that run Symbian are also compatible, although it is worth checking the list to ensure that you are able to make use of the new app.
