Vodafone's revenues were up 1.1 per cent over the last quarter compared with the year-ago period, amid signs that carriers are finally through the worst of the recession.

Increased consumer interest in smartphones and the expansion of the mobile industry in developing regions around the world helped Vodafone pull in £10.6 billion in the period from March to June 2010.

Year-on-year growth for the network's UK operations hit 0.7 per cent, with a surge in demand for mobile data strongly impacting on its improved performance.

Vittorio Colao, Chief Executive Officer at Vodafone, stated: "These are the first quarterly results to show service revenue growth since the global recession impacted.

"We have achieved these results through our continuing commercial approach in key European markets, focusing especially on data and from strong growth in emerging markets."

The UK-wide boom in demand in smartphone sales over recent months has been driven by the arrival of the iPhone 4 in June, as well as Android mobiles such as the HTC Desire and Samsung Galaxy range.
