Google sticks to theme with Android Honeycomb

Android Honeycomb is set to be the name of the version of Google's smartphone operating system that will follow on from Android 3.0 Gingerbread.

The search giant has worked its way through an entire fridge worth of food-related titles for the variants of the Android platform thus far, with Cupcake, Éclair, Froyo and the as yet unreleased Gingerbread all on the menu.

Gingerbread is not set to become available until the run up to Christmas or perhaps even early 2011 and thus it is likely that when Honeycomb arrives it will be given the numerical representation of 3.1 or 3.2, as it will be packed with tweaks rather than game-changing new features.

When Android 3.0 arrives it is likely that a new set of more powerful smartphone hardware will be required to run this high end update, according to Tech Radar.

Android 3.0 is destined not just for dedicated smartphones, but also for tablet PCs and it appears that Google will be lending its name to a number of different devices with the next round of Android updates.

    Let's hope the networks and manufacturers are preparing for this NOW. Or another Froyo debacle awaits us...
