Sony Ericsson Clamshell Tablet Concept

Sony Ericsson designer Du Jun has produced an impressive set of images to outline the functions of a new concept phone that is both a folding clamshell mobile and a widescreen touch sensitive tablet.

The whole thing is made possible thanks to a clever hinge system that sits in one corner and allows the two halves of the mobile to pivot and twist to form its two basic setups.

As well as offering protection for the dual touchscreen displays when folded up and giving an intuitive widescreen layout when positioned side by side, the phone is designed to snap apart into separate halves, which can then offer short-range communication in the style of a walkie-talkie.

Since the designs are just in the concept stage it is not likely that Sony Ericsson will actually bring this style of phone to the market, though it is likely to integrate the innovations in some form in its upcoming range, according to web magazine Yanko.

It's an intriguing design, but I doubt it will ever materialise into an actual product. It would probably be more suitable as an eReader or a handheld gaming device like the DS. Sony Ericsson needs to stop experimenting with their phones and bring out products that are simple but still great to look at.
